Mrs. Smith Goes to New York

On the Job

So, I catch the bus to headquarters in the morning, marveling at the idea of how lucky I am
to be staying in this hotel and working within walking distance. One or two miles walking is no big deal for me, right?

Well, my check in at headquarters lasted about 3 hours and then it was decided that I would be best utilized
working at Staten Island. I was told to go back to the hotel, check out and get to Staten Island.

I do not need to tell you all that I was disappointed. But, I am flexible and go where I'm needed.
I get to Staten Island at about two and I'm told by my Family Service Coordinator that I am to supervise ten volunteers.
We had about twenty at that time and Nancy , who is a specialist, was to take ten and I, the other half.

Our Service Center was at the Manresa Jesuit Retreat in Staten Island.
It was on a beautiful piece of property with rolling hills and it had a terrific view of Manhatten.

Father Ryan took great care of us and he is a great person with a fantastic sense of humor.
We had fifteen Americorps kids. They were between the ages of 19 and 22.
They traveled from Washington DC, where their headquarters is, but they came from all over the US.
I know it was very difficult for us all. We were constantly struggling with a language barrier,
as most of our clients where from Russia, China, and a few from Africa.
The majority or our clients were limo drivers who suffered a severe loss of business.
The limo drivers where making a nice living off of the employees and clientele who
visited the World Trade Center and other financial institutions close by.
